Dot and VCOMM showed their “DOT Classroom in LEARNTEC-2009”

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

From 3 to February 5, the LERANTEC-2009 fair took place in Karlsruhe (Germany).  LERANTEC is an international venue for experts in  e-learning and knowledge management. Among more than 200 vendors who gathered there, we (Eduardo Valencia and Javier Selva, joined Volker Gässler of VCOMM.

At the booth for the presentation of the DOT CLASSROOM.

LERANTEC-2009 is a major appointment for the experts in e-learning and knowledge management, as well as the most important of this kind in Germany. Learntec is the right place for the presentation of the latest products, applications and services in this sector, accompanied by conferences and other special events and forums.

DOT did not want to miss the meeting to present DOT Classroom and accompanied VCOMM at the F6.1 booth of the fair.

The benefits of DOT CLASSROOM

DOT Classroom  focuses on several key factors: virtual reality, feeling of immersion, cooperation and cost saving.

DOT classroom is a virtual environment that allows companies to facilitate communication between individuals and groups located in different places. Avatars and environments are similar to the real ones, which allows to hold training sessions in an immersive way, while helping them overcome the obstacle distance.

The effect of virtual reality is that the user receives the impression of actually being emotionally close to others in the same environment. Furthermore, the virtual learning becomes more relaxed and the participants end up feeling a lot less tired than when using a web conference or videoconference.

The first time in Second Life

The first time is important. As in other spheres of life, an initial negative experience in Second Life is likely to scare the new user for good. Therefore, for the first time, we must prepare everything with special attention.

If we fail here, it’s easy that the user
will end up thinking that SL is immature or that the technological barrier is too high…

Experience is a degree and our team is accumulating experiences that allow us to sketch a brief guide to ensure the success of the first time in Second Life:

1. Create the avatar of the client before the first meeting. This is a valuable time-saver, because we may begin directly our meeting.

2. W
e will ensure that the rooky meets the requirements: USB-headset, ,inimum requirements of the computer.
3. Check the computer of the new user personally, if possible.
4. Trying to to be successful in a training course on SL inside SL for a group of beginners is a lottery. It will work if we do it with one person.
5. Cut and clear lessons: use the cameraa – sit down and chat-speak
6. Once in Second Life go immediately to our virtual premises, sit down and begin to talk. Don’t allow them to fly around with no control.
7. When we session ends, invite them to revisit the sim and to keep practicing.

UNIGIS in Second Life

Monday, August 25th, 2008

UNIGIS Girona, on the tenth anniversary of his Master online will complement its distance learning with the virtual tools of Second Life.

The University of Girona is responsible for the Master Program UNIGIS in Geographic Information Systems since 1999. Girona joined the international network of universities that comprise the International Association UNIGIS.

DOT is working with UNIGIS to develop a project that includes an island with auditorium, classrooms, workshophs and offices. Unigis Girona will also have their own servers (not dependent on the network in Second Life) for audio, streaming video and a tool optimized for powerpoint presentations.

Students in the GIS master of UNIGIS are scattered throughout the world and yet, thanks to Second Life, they will be able to come and participate with their avatars in classes taught in Second Life. They may also collaborate in seminars with other students and teachers.

On the occasion of the 10. anniversary of the Master Selva Producciones has produced an original video in which Dot has developed the virtual images shot in Second Life. In the fragment that we extracted from the video Irene Compte, Director of UNIGIS GIRONA explains the project through her avatar.
